Bay Bridge equipment for new span is sent to scrap yard and then called back

A strange story in the San Francisco Chronicle: "The star-crossed Bay Bridge project entered a new realm of strangeness over the weekend when the chief contractor dismantled a huge piece of equipment that will be needed if the proposed suspension span is ever built and hauled it out of the bay to be sold as scrap. On Tuesday, as word started getting around that the state was throwing a giant wrench into Bay Area officials' plans for a signature single-tower span, Caltrans ordered the contractor to retrieve the massive steel structure and stick it back in the water."
